They are the leading causes of disability and deaths in the U.S. Aside from being a threat to human health, chronic diseases are the top drivers of the nation’s rising healthcare costs, accounting for $4.1 trillion annually. Previous empirical studies have found that lifestyle factors including physical inactivity, poor nutrition, excessive alcohol consumption, and tobacco use increase risks for chronic diseases.
